How can you stay safe on your bicycle?

Riding your bicycle around the beautiful scenery of Washington can be a lot of fun and allow you to experience the thrill and relaxation of riding in the open air. However, being on a bicycle and riding near motor vehicles can be quite hazardous and even dangerous if you do not pay attention. While there are general suggestions for riding your bike safely such as wearing a helmet, maintaining your bike and following traffic laws, being aware of some other essential safety suggestions can give you an even higher level of protection.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, while you may not be as visible to drivers of motor vehicles in general when you are driving near buses, trucks and other large vehicles, you may be nearly invisible. As such, it is critical that you understand how to drive safely around these vehicles. Some suggestions for you to consider include the following:

  • Large vehicles take a much more extended period to completely stop. Never cross in front of them or assume that you can make it across the street when one is coming toward you.
  • Do not listen to loud music or podcasts that could impair your hearing and cause you to be distracted from noticing horns, sirens and other warning signs.
  • Understand the blind spots on large vehicles and avoid riding directly in those areas. When a large vehicle is making a right-hand turn, stay clear of their path.
  • Always dress in clothing that is noticeable and bright. You should also consider outfitting your bicycle with reflective gear that will provide higher visibility to other motorists.
