What risks do construction sites pose to Seattle citizens?

Construction can stand as evidence of growth, improvement and a thriving economy. While this certainly may be true, it is undeniable that construction sites also brings certain risks to the area. This is worth considering given the fact that developers are working on over $3 billion worth of construction projects in Seattle, according to NW Construction Illustrated.

Construction is clearly lucrative, but it is often also dangerous. Anybody working on a site or walking through the streets of Seattle could become injured due to some of the common risks present on a construction site. Be careful and stay aware of the following perils you could fall victim to.

Cranes can be hazardous

Overhead cranes and other large lift systems are imperative for the kind of high-rise construction often being done in the city. Operating these cranes is a job that should only be done by a skilled professional, and it should always fall within safety parameters. Too often, operators are inexperienced or cranes are overloaded, and accidents result. Pedestrians and workers alike may suffer injury.

Sites may not be clearly marked

Not many people would knowingly walk onto a construction site and place themselves in harm’s way. It is not uncommon, however, for pedestrians to enter construction zones that workers or authorities have not clearly marked or secured. This can easily become an injurious and even fatal situation. Insufficiently marked construction sites put everybody in the vicinity at an increased risk.

There may be falling objects

Falling objects are one of the most common causes of injury on construction sites. Toeboards and other precautions can help to prevent such accidents, but these safety measures are not always implemented consistently or correctly. All too easily, construction workers working on elevated platforms can accidentally kick or drop tools and other items down below to strike any pedestrians who happen to be passing by.
